So we're going to spend $900 million to help rebuild Gaza. Wow. Just wow. I hate to sound like a jerk but seeing as how we are in financial chaos within our own country and seeing as how Gaza was not exactly the greatest place to live in to begin with don't you think this is just ludicrous?
This is one of many aspects in the United States that I am at odds with. I want to help my fellow man as much as the next guy but I also need to look out for myself. It can be summed up in the old adage: "Give an inch and they take a mile." Everyone simply EXPECTS us to help. It is our lot to police the world and be Mommy in others times of need. But when Mom gets sick who helps? Mom. I don't know about you but when my mom got tired of us as kids taking advantage of her kindness she was quick with a wooden spoon and made it very clear that we had limits.
I'm not proposing the wooden spoon be used on other countries to let them know how we feel. I am suggesting we stop. We stop and we let them know it is stopping until we can reign in our own problems. It's time the world grew up and moved out of the proverbial house and made a living on their own.
A great example of a country who has done well (in this aspect) is Israel. They rose again in the 1940's and now look at them. They maintain themselves fairly well. Yes, they rely on the global economy and outside means for some things but they are very aware of their infrastructure and borders. Israel may be a bad example to compare to the USA because their borders are constantly under fire but that makes my point even more legitimate in some ways! If we are NOT under attack or under threat of attack constantly we should be able to pour more resources into our own well-being and infrastructure than someone who is.
I hope it is not too late for this once great nation to get back on its feet but the pessimist in me thinks our time is up. At best we can hope for some of the more conservative states to band together and form a new Union that reflects more of what our founding fathers had in mind instead of the corrupt, twisted, fascist government that now looms near us.
